Fitzroy and surroundings.
Fitzroy is Melbourne’s oldest suburb, and consequently, one that many communities feel connected to. Walk any of the main streets – Smith, Gertrude, Brunswick or Johnston – and you’ll find yourself in the midst of Melbourne's famous cafe, restaurant and dining scene.
In its earliest days the area was working class. Most of the small terrace houses from that era remain, alongside pubs such as the Rose, Napier, Union Club, Rainbow and Labour in Vain. The backstreets often have a quaint feel. That is, until you stumble on a massive piece from one of the many street artists who paint in the area.
Even with gentrification and escalating property prices, second-hand shops, live music, independent galleries, artist studios and community theatre shows remain a fixture.
We often refer to Broadsheet, a city guide, to stay in the know about new restaurants and shops as they have a great directory; check out their website.
How to use the map below
For your convenience we’ve curated a map below outlining our favourite cafes, bars, shops and restaurants as well as supermarkets, pharmacy’s and the police station. The map has layers to filter places for hospitality, shops, parking or other amenities. Click on the ‘door’ left of the letter A to show and view layers.
We recommend starting your day with a coffee from Gabriel and strolling the famous square: Gertrude st to Smith st, along Johnston st and back down Brunswick st.
